April 2, 2008 - Maverick Bartlett and Patrick Cushenberry Score Podiums on Busy Racing Weekend

This past weekend was a busy one for Msquared drivers with the Gatorz Challenge of the Americas finale at the X-Plex in Vegas as well as the ProKart Challenge opener at Calspeed in Fontana, Ca.

Making the trek to Vegas were Maverick Bartlett, Madison, Snow, Holden Jung, Ken and Garrett Maxfield and Bonnier Moulton. Meanwhile, Patrick Cushenberry soldiered to Calspeed to uphold Msquared's honor. At the end of the weekend, both Maverick (proud owner of the most famous helmet in Rotax racing) and Patches earned themselves the right to stand on the second step of the podium. Both drivers are mounted on Arrow chassis (Maverick on a B-Max and Patches on an AX-8 125).

Congratulations to Mav and Patches for a great showing and to everyone else who made the journey for your support!

March 23, 2008 - Msquared Customers Dominate at Round 1 of the Litho Flexo Spring Championship series at MMP

The Utah karting season got underway this past Easter weekend as racers braved the chilly weather to contest the first race of the Litho Flexo Spring Championship series at Miller Motorsports Park. It didn't take long for Msquared customers to display their now customary dominant form.

By day's end, Msquared customers had driven to victory in Rotax Junior (Madison Snow/Arrow B-Max), Rotax Masters (Ken Maxfield/Arrow B-Max), Stock Moto light (Carter James/Tony Krypton), Stock Moto heavy (Ryan Pool/Arrow AX-9 125), Sportsman (Ray Carrier/Tony Mitox), and for good measure, Msquared's Bonnier Moulton mounted a Rotax motor on his PTK Racer EVXX shifter chassis and took the win in Rotax International.

A big thanks from Msquared to all our customers for your support and effort. We're looking forward to many more wins as the season progresses!

March 10, 2008 - Patrick Cushenberry Grabs Second Place at SKUSA Winternationals

Not wanting to be outdone by his fellow Msquared driver from Utah, Tyler Bennett, Patrick Cushenberry hit the final round of the SKUSA Winternationals gunning for a podium finish. Driving an Arrow AX-8 out of the Select Shifter stable, "Patches" who has moved up to the fiercely competitive S3 class for 2008, showed that he has upped his game considerably.

Running only on Saturday of the 2-day event, Cushenberry qualified his Arrow in P4 trailing Bobby Legate, Bryan Eady and Clinton Schoombee, three of the fastest Stock Moto pilots in the country. A bobbled start and a 7th place finish in the first heat was turned around in the second heat as Patrick worked his way back into the fourth position for the start of the main.

In the main event with Legate running at the point and Eady in the tire wall, Cushenberry stalked Schoombee relentlessly, gluing himself to the SoCal drivers' rear bumper before executing a perfect pass at the end of CalSpeed's long straight to grab second spot.

Congrats on a great race Patches!

In short, these are series that we are proud to be associated with." said Msquared principal Scott Clark.

"Rotax Max is a very important segment of our business," added Msquared's shop manager Mike Beeny, "And many of our Rotax customers wanted to run the Challenge of the Americas series. So it makes sense for us to take a supporting role."

January 15, 2008 - Tyler Bennett Scores at SKUSA Winternationals

This past weekend saw the first rounds of the inagaural SKUSA Winternationals series take place at the CalSpeed kart track located on the grounds of California Speedway in Fontana. Tyler Bennett took the opportunity to get out of the frigid Utah Winter and enjoy some sunshine and tough racing on board his new 2008 PTK Racer EVXX.

Armed with a new Msquared Stock Moto Honda CR125, Tyler made his first visit to the CalSpeed track, a track that is notorious among locals for being the most physically demanding in SoCal. Undaunted, Bennett quickly learned the track and got up to speed.

On Saturday, the young Utahn qualified 8th, finished 8th in the first heat, 5th in the second heat and then drove a stellar race to 3rd place in the main event knocking a few tenths off of his lap times each time out.

On Sunday, Bennett slotted his PTK into 5th after qualifying and finished 5th in both heats. After some final chassis and jetting tweaks, Bennett turned up the wick in the main event, running right on the bumper of Bryan Eady and Bobby Legate, two of the top stock moto drivers in the nation to finish 3rd while claiming fast lap of the race.

Great Job Tyler!

August 21, 2007 - Jerry Tatum Continues Msquared's Podium Streak at Rotax Grand Nationals

Just getting invited to the Rotax Nationals is a major accomplishment in karting. It requires talent, dedication and a little bit of luck. But once you get to the big show, the pressure is really on. One mistake can take you from contender to also-ran. In 2006, Msquared/Arrow drivers Michael Self and Austin Isaac stood on the second and third steps of the podium in Rotax Junior at the Grand Nationals. This year, it was Jerry Tatum who brought home a podium finish with his second place run in Rotax Masters.

This year, with all Msquared drivers on Arrow chassis, the team shared pit space with Team Arrow USA and Billet Performance out of Colorado. The tents was loaded with talent, both behind the wheel and behind the wrenches. Notable tuners such as Shayne Shipley, Kimball Williams and Mike Robbins as well as support from the Arrow factory in Australia were on hand to lend advice to whomever needed it. Bonnier Moulton was also on hand doing double-duty helping out Zac Clark (Rotax Senior) and Mike Beeny (DD2).

In the Rotax Masters class it was Tatum, Maverick Bartlett and Shannon Schmidt carrying the banner for Msquared, all three drivers on Arrow B-Max chassis. Maverick and Jerry were among the fastest in nearly every track session. In qualifying, Maverick timed in 4th with Jerry in 6th with less than a tenth of a second separating them. In the heat races, Maverick began to flex his muscles winning his first heat by an astounding nine seconds with a best lap over 5/10ths quicker than anyone else. In his second heat, Maverick led Tatum across the line, once again taking fast lap honors. Maverick ran into trouble in his final heat. While running in second, the leader spun out taking Maverick out of the race. Jerry meanwhile had struggles of his own, carding a 2nd and two 9th place finishes in his heats. Shannon's weekend was filled with difficulty and he found himself in the LCQ needing a top six finish to transfer to the main.

In the LCQ, Schmidt looked to be battling in for a transfer spot when he dropped out of the race, weekend done. For the pre-final, Maverick and Jerry would line up in 6th and 7th respectively. Maverick, the young bull from Jackson Hole, Wyoming looked to be the driver to beat for the National title as he stormed from his starting spot to take the lead in the pre-final by lap nine. Unfortunately, he lost a chain after building a large lead and would have to start the main from near the back of the pack. Turning the fastest lap of the pre-final was little consolation for Maverick as he would now have to start the main from the 28th position. Tatum meanwhile, had moved up to third by lap 14 and would finish there, giving him a fantastic starting position for the main. The two Msquared drivers were the only ones to turn sub-57 second laps in the pre-final.

The excitement in the Masters main came primarily from Maverick as he sliced his way through the pack. While the leaders did little passing, Maverick was on a mission as he methodically sliced his way from 28th to 8th by the checkered flag while turning the second fastest lap of the race. Jerry drove a flawless race, pacing the leader and turning the fastest lap of the race on the 22nd of 24 tours, moving to within striking distance at the end. Congratulation from everyone at Msquared to Jerry, Maverick and Shannon for their outstanding seasons.

In the DD2 category it was Mike Beeny flying the Msquared banner. Mike, normally a Pro ICC driver, went to the Grand Nationals with very little DD2 experience, running the minimum amount to qualify. Mike's week would be tale of bad luck. Consistently quick in the morning and evening sessions, the heat of the midday proved to be a difficult puzzle for Mike and Bonnier to solve. In qualifying, Mike timed in 14th, substantially off of the pace he knew he could run.

As every racer knows, the middle of the pack is a no-man's land. This was bourne out as Mike was taken out of the first heat by an over-anxious competitor. The next heat was held in the heat of the day and again Mike struggled, finishing 11th. The final nail in the coffin was hammered in when the afternoon rains came for his third heat. Mike was caught up in a first corner fracas, leading to a 16th place finish and a 19th place starting position for the pre-final.

In the pre-final, as if to prove that his luck is all of the bad kind, Mike was once again caught up in a first lap melee. He continued on with a bent steering shaft to a 20th place finish. The good news was that he had found the pace, turning the fourth fastest lap even with a tweaked kart.

For the main event, Mike and Bonnier had finally come to grips with the DD2 package and Mike stormed through the field working his way up to 12th by lap eight. But yet again bad luck struck hard when a mechanical malfunction sent Mike off hard into the barriers having turned the fifth fastest race lap. It was a fitting end to a difficult week.

In the hotly contested Senior class, Msquared had a stellar driver lineup comprised of Michael Self, Zac Clark, Garrett Maxfield and John Thompson. The Senior class was enormous with 66 of the best Rotax pilots in the nation trying to make the main event.

With a field this large, qualifying was critical and unfortunately, all four Msquared drivers suffered. Garrett, Michael and Zac timed in all together in 29th, 30th and 31st within .043 seconds of one another with Thompson timing in 47th. The heat races would be critical for all four as they would all have to move forward to avoid the LCQ.

Michael's experience would shine through as he was able to move from his 8th row starting position in each heat to card a 11, 9, 9 trio of finishes. Bonnier struggled with setup, unable to give Zac a kart that was consistently quick in the varying conditions. Nonetheless, Zac strung together a 16, 12, 17 trio having fallen prey to a number of fist corner skirmishes. Maxfield was quick, but suffered from two DNF's as a result of aggressive drivers and would join Thompson who was experiencing his first event of this caliber in the LCQ.

In the LCQ, Thompson was out immediately in yet another first-corner melee. Maxfield drove an excellent race finishing in fourth and transferring to the main event.

In the Senior pre-final, Michael moved up strongly from his 17th place starting spot to finish tenth, giving him a realistic shot at the front of the pack. Maxfield was stellar, moving from the back of the pack to 17th while Zac was unable to avoid some of the carnage and fell back to 25th.

With storm clouds overhead the Senior Max main event took to the track. Zac was the first casualty as a mechanical malfunction left him stranded on the track on the warmup lap. The green flag flew and the chaos began. One by one (or sometimes two by two) karts spun and crashed. By lap seven, Michael was into 5th place while Garrett had moved to 12th. By lap ten, Michael was into third with a large gap to 4th and running down the leaders. Garrett continued to move forward and on lap twelve moved into the sixth spot. Then the chaos began.

A red flag was thrown and a thirty minute break followed in which the rain began to fall. Drivers were given there choice of tires, rain or dry. When the race resumed, nearly all the drivers were on slicks. Michael continued to run in third but his kart was slow out of the corners due to a gear that was shedding it's teeth. He tenaciously held onto third until he was forced off line allowing a freight train of karts to go by, dropping him to 6th. Garrett meanwhile was knocked off the track by a driver who had already been penalized 30 seconds, but inexplicably had been allowed to restart near the front of the pack. Then, the rain began to fall and even though the drivers had been given their choice of tires, the race was red flagged again. Michael ended up finishing in 6th with Maxfield a disappointed 17th.

Michael would later be awarded the Skip Barber regional scholarship, a deserving award for a great driver. Msquared would like to congratulate and thank all our drivers for their great effort, perseverance and performance at the 2007 Rotax Grand Nationals.

August 20, 2007 - Msquared's Michael Self Wins Skip Barber Scholarship at Rotax Grand Nationals

Michael Self, one of Msquared's primary drivers was chosen by a panel of judges at the recent Rotax Grand Nationals in Centennial, Colorado as the recipient of the prestigious Skip Barber Scholarship. Picked from all the 16-18 year old competitors at the event, Michael will receive six double-race weekends including Friday practice in the Skip Barber regional series of his choice.

"Since the first time I saw Michael drive his Junior 1 Tony Kart, I knew he had the talent to succeed in racing. He's a fast little squid! Seriously though, I'm really proud of him and excited about the opportunity he's getting." - Bonnier Moulton

"All of us at Msquared are proud and excited that one of our own was chosen for this honor. We know he's going to kick some a** next year!" - Scott Clark

Congratulations Michael from everyone at Msquared!

April 3, 2007 - Strong Opening Performance for Msquared Customers and Team

This past weekend saw the opening of the 2007 season as over 100 drivers gathered for Round 1 of the IceBreaker Challenge at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. Msquared drivers, many with new karts, were out in force looking to start the new season off on a positive note...and they did.

In the Stock Moto Heavy class, R.J. Edgington brought home the big trophy aboard his new Arrow AX9 with brother Todd (Arrow AX9) coming home second and Msquared's own resident geezer Larry Moulton (Tony Kart) finishing third.

In the curiously small Stock Moto Light class, Msquared studmuffin Mike Beeny tweaked on his Arrow AX9 throughout the day, trying different setups so as to have more information to pass along to customers. By the main event, Beeny was beginning to find the pace that allowed him to dominate the end of 2006, driving away to a four second win with a fast lap nearly half a second faster than his closest rival.

Rotax International looks to be fiercely competitive in 2007 with Michael Self (Arrow B-Max), Zac Clark (Arrow B-Max) and a number of other quick drivers moving up from the junior category. Add to that, Tom Eichelberger (Tony Kart) Garrett Maxfield (Birel), John Thompson (Arrow B-Max), Cody Tracy (First Kart) and many other talented, yet new to Rotax, drivers and you find that this group compares favorably to any Rotax International grid in the nation.

At the end of the day, it was Michael Self who drew first blood, taking the main event win by 8.5 seconds over the second place finisher. Zac Clark suffered a last lap mechanical failure when his battery lead came off, dropping him from second place after turning the race's fastest lap.

In Rotax Master's, it was Maverick Bartlett (Arrow B-Max) taking the first win with a hard charge from his eighth place starting position, posting a very narrow margin of victory (.094 seconds) over Derek Murdock (Arrow B-Max). 2006 Champion Shannon Schmidt drove his Arrow up from the 12th grid spot to salvage a 5th place finish.

In Junior 1 4-Cycle, 2006 Champ Alex Yates picked up where he left off aboard his Tony Kart Rocky Cadet taking two heat race wins and a second plance to secure the overall victory.

Holden Jung drove to victory in the Junior 2 4-Cycle class followed by Alyssa Malloy on her new Arrow AX8 4-Stroke. Alyssa also finished third in her first Rotax Junior race on her equally new Arrow B-Max, following home second place Madison Snow who was also piloting a brand new B-Max.

Msquared customer and 2006 Champion Mark Morgan brought home the Sportsman win over Raymond Carrier.

Msquared congratulates all our customers on an excellent start to the 2007 campaign!

November 22, 2006 - Self and Isaac Take On The World At Rotax World Finals
photos courtesy of Susan Self

Msquared /Arrow drivers Michael Self and Austin Isaac continued their fairytale season as they traveled across the globe to cross swords with the best Junior Rotax drivers in the world at the 2006 Rotax World Finals in Portugal.

Self and Isaac were two of the most dominant Junior Rotax drivers in the U.S. throughout the '06 season. The two drivers finished one-three respectively at the Rotax Western Grand Regional then capped that off by finishing two-three (Isaac in second and Self in third) at the Nationals at Road America earning themselves invitations to the prestigious World Finals.

Once in Portugal though, the fairytale story turned into a nightmare as the event was plagued with neverending, torrential rain. With both drivers having limited experience in the wet, their task was daunting when facing drivers from parts of the world where driving in the rain is commonplace. While both drivers were very fast in the rare, dry conditions, the nonstop rain made both their lives very difficult.

In qualifying, Self timed in at 44th with Isaac coming home in 55th meaning both drivers would have their work cut out from them to make it into the final. Self would card a 19,16,29 trio of heat race finishes while Isaac finished with a 26,17,17. Both drivers would have to come through the LCQ to make the main.

Unfortunately, it just wasn't to be. With both drivers making valiant attempts to get into a transfer spot, Self would finish 14th in the LCQ with Isaac in 17th.

Everybody at Msquared congratulates Mike and Austin for their outstanding season and their strong representation for Msquared, Arrow and all Utah Karters. Good Job!

November 15, 2006 - Msquared Drivers Fare Well At '06 Supernationals

As part of the "karting collective" along with Select Shifter and Speedtech, Msquared had five drivers "under the tent" for the recent SKUSA Supernationals. In Superpro, Mike Beeny carried the banner on his Arrow AX9 with SwedeTech Maxter power. In G1, it was 2004 winner Bonnier Moulton debuting the new PTK by Tony Kart with SwedeTech Maxter power courtesy of Reaction Karting. Scott Clark and Randy Mitchell carried the Msquared banner in Stock Moto heavy while Patrick Cushenberry joined the Stock Moto light battle in his first Supernationals.

For Beeny, the weekend was bittersweet. In the end, the results were not exactly what he'd hoped for, but given the difficulties of the weekend they were something to be proud of. Beeny had been among the quicker drivers leading up to qualifying posting the 12th fastest time in the final warmup session on pace with some of the best drivers in the game. Unfortunately, it was downhill from there as Beeny slid to 25th in qualifying. When stuck in the middle of the pack, the heat races can be dicey and this adage turned out to be true as Beeny suffered two DNF's putting him into the LCQ. Beeny managed to nab the final transfer spot into the main and started the final from the outside of the last row. From there, he launched a great drive and moved up from 40th to 23rd by the checkered flag.

In G1, Moulton, spent Wednesday assembling his new PTK at the track. Early on, it was clear that there were four drivers who would be battling for the win: Collin Lynn, Darren Elliott, fellow karting collective member Shayne Shipley and Moulton. After the heats it was Moulton on the pole by virtue of three clean heat races. The other three contenders had suffered a DNF each and would start from rows 2, 3 and 4. In the main, Moulton made a clean getaway and quickly built a substantial lead. Unfortunately, a red flag would eliminate his advantage. After the restart, Moulton who had battled straight-line speed issues the entire weekend, was an easy target as Lynn, Shipley and then Elliott each worked past him on the long back straight. Moulton held on for fourth after battling with Sergio Machado who was eager to take the spot.

In Stock Moto Heavy, Clark and Mitchell both had great weekends. Clark slotted in 12th after qualifying in his first Supernationals appearance while Mitchell would start the heats from 17th. Clark would go on to card a 12,10,8 trio of finishes in the heats, moving further up the field with each outing. In the first two heats, Mitchell moved up (13,13) but a DNF in the final heat would move him back in the field for the main event. In the final, Mitchell who was starting 17th, pulled off one of his trademark demon starts and jumped six spots to 11th while Clark got off the line a bit slower and dropped five spots to 12th. Clark would drop further in the order during the early running before finding his rhythm and moving up quickly in the order to finish 9th. Mitchell strongly and steadily drove his way forward to a stellar 6th place finish.

For Cushenberry, his first Supernationals was a learning experience. The young driver struggled early, but got better and better as the weekend wore on. Clocking in 22nd after qualifying, Cushenberry would go on to card an 18,11,19 trio of finishes in the heats lining him up 19th for the final. In the main, the young driver really came alive and drove his way up to 11th at the finish, narrowly missing cracking the top-ten.

A sincere congratulations to everybody for a great showing and a great time at this years Supernationals!

September 23, 2006 - Team Msquared Puts Two on Podium at Rotax Nationals
photos courtesy of Susan Self

Even with the rain and cold, it was a stellar weekend for Msquared drivers at the Rotax Grand Nationals at Road America. Junior drivers Austin Isaac and Michael Self continued the form they've shown all year long by finishing 2nd and 3rd. by doing so, they each earned a coveted spot on Team USA and a trip to the World Finals to compete against the best Rotax drivers on the planet.

Even the rainy conditions couldn't slow the two even though Self had only one previous experience in the rain and Isaac had never driven in the rain. Both drivers performed flawlessly throughout the weekend as did their Arrow B-Max chassis and Msquared motors. Isaac and Self's junior teammate, Zac Clark was among the quickest drivers in the dry, but encountered difficulty in the rainy prefinal knocking him back to a 23rd starting spot for the main. Clark drove quickly and steadily in the main event to a 12th place finish.

In the Master's class, Maverick Bartlett, in his first national event and first taste of driving in the rain, put in one of the best drives of the weekend. During the Master's prefinal, Bartlett fell victim to a dead battery early on forcing him to start the main event from the 29th grid spot. With some last minute setup changes to his Arrow B-Max by Msquared's Scott Clark, "Mav" made it look easy, rampaging through the Master's field sometimes passing two or three karts per lap. By the time the checkered flag waved, Bartlett had moved all the way to seventh place having turned the 5th fastest lap. A few more laps and a top-five finish was a very real possibility. Ken Maxfield struggled throughout the event, never quite finding the setup that he wanted. Finally, by the main event, he found a good setup and was able to show his true pace. Maxfield drove from 23rd to 13th running times similar to drivers inside the top five.

In the Senior Max class (what used to be called "International"), Garrett Maxfield brought his kart home 16th in what was a very eventful main event. Changing conditions, three red flags, drivers on both wet and dry tires and multiple incidents made this race feel like it took forever to complete. The race was eventually called early when the third red flew for an incident on the front straight.

Regardless of the temperature and rain, the race was enjoyable for all as the track was one of the best we've seen. A great combination of speed and technical sections combined with great scenery make Road America a definite winner. Congratulations to Austin Isaac, Michael Self, Zac Clark, Maverick Bartlett, Ken and Garrett Maxfield!

June 26, 2006 - Msquared Drivers and Customers Enjoy Plenty of Success at Summer Shootout

There were plenty of "feel good" stories for Msquared drivers and customers this past weekend in Tooele, Utah at the Miller Motorsports Park Summer Shootout. In the Pro Class, Msquared's Mike Beeny was simply dominant on his Arrow with SwedeTech Maxter Power. Beeny put his machine on pole, won both heats and drove away to a convincing win in the main event. In the process he pocketed a cool $2,600.00. Msquared's old fart, Bonnier Moulton borrowed a kart and brought it home in second place but was so exhausted he forgot which side of the podium to stand on.

In Rotax Junior, Michael Self continued his winning ways and pocketed $1,000 for his hard work. A special shout out goes to Austin Isaac who brought his Msquared Arrow home in second place. Isaac had been driving in extreme pain the entire weekend and found out afterward that he had multiple separated ribs.

Austin's brother Tigh put in the drive of the race in Stock Moto light on his Msquared Tony Krypton finishing second and turning the fast lap of the race. Carter James finished fourth and turned the second fastest lap of the race. In Stock Moto heavy, Todd Edgington brought home a fourth place with Ryan Poole bringing home fifth.

Tyler Bennett surprised the out of towner's in the Rotax International class with his pace and racecraft on his way to third place and local Rotax Masters hotshoe Jerry Tatum battled overheating problems on his way to third. A special congratulations goes out to Shannon Schmidt who is a nexus of bad luck. He shook the clinging monkey of misfortune off his back and drove a fantastic race to finish fourth in Masters. Let's hope the monkey stays away!

A sincere congratulations and thank you to all our customers who took part in the Shootout and also to the staff at MMP for staging this event. (Podium photo courtesy of Susan Self www.selfactionsports.com)

May 30, 2006 - Msquared Drivers Enjoy Stellar Weekend In SoCal

Msquared junior drivers Michael Self, Austin Isaac and Zac Clark trekked to Willow Springs in the Mojave desert this past weekend to contest round four of the Gatorz Eyewear Golden State Karting Cup, one of the most competitive Rotax Max Challenge series in the nation.

On board their new Arrow B-Max chassis, Self, Isaac and Clark put forth a phenomenal effort taking the series regulars by surprise. Self put his B-Max on the pole with Isaac in fourth and Clark in eighth. The prefinal was the Self/Isaac show as Austin methodically moved from his second row starting spot into second place assuring himself of a front row start for the main event alongside Self.

The main event started on the wrong foot for Self as he was relegated from pole to third at the end of the first circuit. Clark on the other hand had put in an incredible first lap to move from eleventh to fourth putting him right on Self's bumper. Isaac was slotted into second and on lap seven he put his B-Max into the lead. On lap seventeen of the thirty-three lap main, as the competitions karts started to go off, Self upped his pace running consistently within a tenth of a second of his qualifying time and took over second.

By lap twenty-three, Self had eliminated the gap between himself and Isaac and made his bid for the lead. Once in front, Self inched away while the ailing (sore back) Isaac consolidated his second place. After his stellar start, Clark battled with several drivers eventually coming home in seventh.

Msquared's Bonnier Moulton who was on hand to handle tuning duties for the trio was very impressed with the Arrow B-Max. "To be honest, this chassis did things I've never seen before. Not only was it incredibly responsive to the adjustments I made but it showed a level of consistency that blew me away. On new rubber, Michael (Self) qualified at a 44.8. After a twenty lap prefinal and thirty-three lap main, he was still running 44.9s. The next day we ran the same set of tires at a club race at the same track. After two practice sessions, qualifying and a heat race Michael was still running 44.9s at the end of the main. That's seven heat cycles and over 100 laps on the tires with basically no drop in performance. That's pretty amazing."
